Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Dr. Akwasi Amponsah is an Interventional Pain Management Specialist and Anesthesiologist currently practicing in New Jersey. His journey from a childhood in Ghana to the proud owner of The Center for Advanced Pain Management and Wellness in Ridgewood, NJ has been exciting and inspiring.

Dr. Amponsah moved to the United States in 1996 to join his nuclear family. He arrived having completed the 10th grade and immediately entered a disadvantaged high school in Newark, NJ to continue his studies. While there, he worked hard to avoid the criminal and gang related activities that plagued the school. His focus and discipline allowed him to excel in his studies and gain admission to Rutgers University as an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar. At Rutgers, Dr. Amponsah nurtured his interest in science and healthcare by majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Psychology. During his junior year of college, Dr. Amponsah was accepted into the competitive ACCESS-MED program, a pipeline program between Rutgers University and Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), that granted him conditional acceptance into the medical school while still an undergraduate.

As an undergraduate at Rutgers University, he enrolled and excelled in medical school courses and was subsequently granted full acceptance into the medical school. Upon graduation, he went on to complete a residency in Anesthesiology. During residency, he served as a Resident Delegate for the Committee of Interns and Residents, advocating for rights and privileges for physicians-in-training.
